Warren County High School Generates Solar Power

Warren County High School (WCHS) in Warrenton, NC, will soon be the home of the largest photovoltaic solar energy system installed on a North Carolina school. Argand Energy Solutions will install a 496-kW solar panel array across the rooftop of WCHS. The system will produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 50 to 60 homes. In addition to the rooftop system, Argand will be providing a solar panel at ground level and equipping WCHS with the tools to make solar education available in the school's curriculum.

RB Engineering performed a structural analysis of the school's roof system and framing to verify that the new solar installation would be safely supported by the existing roof system. WCHS has undergone multiple expansions since it was originally constructed. The roof system was constructed of various prefabricated joists including older series that are no longer produced, specially designed joist girders, and common joist series that we see often in new construction. After doing some research, we were able to find out of print joist catalogs to confirm the load capacities of the older joists. On completion of our inspection and evaluation, we determined that no repairs or modifications were necessary for the school to receive its new solar energy system.

The solar energy system will be installed this summer. To read more about the project, visit WRAL and The Discourse.
